Are you someone who loves to be prepared for any situation, no matter how unpredictable? If so, you’re going to want to hear about the EMP Faraday Backpack.
The truth is, I’ve been eager to get my hands on something like this for a long time. First, you should know I am a backpack junkie. Someday I’ll run a review of all my packs going back about 20 years (many of which I still own) and either still use quite a bit or only use occasionally.
I recently saw this pack online, and dare I say (did I waste my money) I had to have it. With all the electronics we carry today, and on the heels of the new faraday bag travel kit I built, I recently picked up this faraday backpack for use with my laptop, tablet(s), kindle, phone, etc. As well, it can run as double protection for the faraday bag travel kit. Can’t be too careful you know.
This waterproof backpack seems to not only be designed to keep your belongings dry in any weather, but it also has an added layer of protection that will keep your electronics safe from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). With the increase in natural disasters and the ever-present threat of cyber attacks, having a backpack like this is a game-changer for local, business, or leisure travel. But is it worth the investment? Transparently I picked this up from, not from Ready Hour directly, but from My Patriot Supply on sale for $69.95 which I thought was a steal for a bag like this, especially at 30 liters.
In this comprehensive review, we’ll dive into the features, benefits, and drawbacks of the EMP Faraday Backpack so you can make an informed decision on whether or not it’s the right fit for your preparedness kit. So buckle up and get ready to feel secure and ready for anything with the EMP Faraday Backpack.
So, what is a Faraday Bag?
Before we dive into the features of the EMP Faraday Backpack, it’s important to understand what a Faraday bag is and why it’s important. A Faraday bag is a type of bag made from a material that blocks electromagnetic radiation. This means that any electronic devices inside the bag are protected from an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). An EMP is a burst of electromagnetic radiation that can be caused by a solar flare, a nuclear explosion, or a cyber attack. If an EMP were to occur, it could potentially fry any electronic devices that are not protected. This is where the EMP Faraday Backpack comes in.
Features of the EMP Faraday Backpack
The EMP Faraday Backpack is not your average backpack. It’s packed with features that make it the perfect addition to your preparedness kit. Here are some of the key features:
One of the standout features of the EMP Faraday Backpack is its waterproof capabilities. The backpack is made from a durable, waterproof material that will keep your belongings dry in any weather. This is especially important if you’re carrying electronic devices that could be damaged by water.
Air Release Valve
Additionally, it is built with a waterproof bag design as well with a small air-port to crack open and press out all the excess air so that you can make the pack as small a form factor as it can be with your gear inside it.
Of course, the most important feature of the EMP Faraday Backpack is its ability to protect your electronic devices from an EMP. The backpack is made from a material that blocks electromagnetic radiation, which means that any devices inside the backpack will be protected in the event of an EMP.
The EMP Faraday Backpack is built to last. It’s made from high-quality materials that are designed to withstand the elements and the wear and tear of everyday use. The backpack also has reinforced stitching and heavy-duty zippers, so you can be confident that your belongings will stay safe and secure.
EMP Faraday Backpack vs. Traditional Backpacks
So how does the EMP Faraday Backpack compare to a traditional backpack? There are a few key differences to consider.
The biggest difference between the EMP Faraday Backpack and a traditional backpack is the level of protection it offers. While a traditional backpack might keep your belongings dry in the rain, it won’t protect them from an EMP. If you’re looking for a backpack that offers both waterproof capabilities and EMP protection, the EMP Faraday Backpack is the way to go.
Another difference to consider is the price. The EMP Faraday Backpack is definitely more expensive than a traditional backpack, but it’s important to remember that you’re paying for added protection. If you’re someone who values preparedness and wants to ensure that your electronic devices are protected, the investment in the EMP Faraday Backpack is worth it.
Finally, it’s worth noting that the EMP Faraday Backpack has less storage space than a traditional backpack. This is because the backpack needs to have extra padding and layers to provide EMP protection. If you’re someone who needs a lot of storage space, you may need to consider a larger backpack or a separate bag for your electronic devices.
EMP Faraday Backpack vs. other Faraday bags
There are a lot of Faraday bags on the market, so how does the EMP Faraday Backpack compare to other options? Here are a few things to consider:
One of the biggest advantages of the EMP Faraday Backpack is its convenience. Unlike other Faraday bags, which are often small and designed to hold only one or two devices, the backpack allows you to carry multiple devices and other essentials all in one place. This makes it a great option for anyone who wants to be prepared without having to carry multiple bags.
In terms of price, the EMP Faraday Backpack is priced in the mid end of the end of the spectrum when you compare it to a 5.11 RUSH or other comparable sized tactical backpack. There are other Faraday bags available at a lower price point, but they may not offer the same level of protection or convenience as the backpack.
Finally, it’s worth considering the durability of other Faraday bags. It should be noted that I’ve not extensively used this pack yet. I have tested its shielding the same way I tested the faraday kit bag. But have not carried this on a plane, or in the field extensively, yet.
It will, however, have my laptop and ipad housed in it when not in use, so it will likely follow me around the house. It’s big enough to be a Get Home Bag, or a small to midsize Bug Out Bag (This old blog post to be updated soon), depending on your bug out philosophy. But again, not sure how it will handle prolonged use on the field yet.
While many Faraday bags are made from high-quality materials, they may or may not be as durable as the EMP Faraday Backpack. If you’re planning to use your Faraday bag on a regular basis, it’s important to choose one that is built to last. I chose this one mostly because of size/capacity, and price point.
Drawbacks that I See with the Faraday Pack
There are three real drawbacks I see. Are they critical drawbacks? More conveniences than drawbacks, really.
- First, there are no internal pockets to slip your laptop, tablet, or notebook into. Not the end of the world. I suspect from a design perspective there were two factors for this; Time to market and cost. Albeit, I could be wrong. To temporarily fix this, I have added a smaller day pack inside the EMP pack so I can separate my tablet, laptop, chargers, plugs, batteries, etc.
- The second, is that the waist strap is just a strap, which isn’t anything special, just a strip of webbing with no padding to make it more comfortable for a long term trek. I’m sure the pack isn’t made for a “Long term” grid down situation, and that it is built to simply protect your gear from getting wet and affected by an EMP, but it’s one of the first things I’ve noticed.
- Lastly, the pack could have more molle webbing for detachable gear for your 1st, second, and third line gear, if you are using it as a core pack on a day to day basis… But again, I feel the pack was built for a short term situation and built more for the initial protection of your gear.
Practical uses for the EMP Faraday Backpack
So what are some practical uses for the EMP Faraday Backpack? Here are a few scenarios where the backpack could come in handy:
If you live in an area that is prone to natural disasters or other emergencies, having a backpack like the EMP Faraday Backpack could be a lifesaver. Not only will it keep your belongings dry in wet weather, but it will also ensure that your electronic devices are protected in the event of an EMP.
If you’re someone who travels frequently, the EMP Faraday Backpack could be a great investment. It will not only keep your belongings dry in rainy weather, but it will also protect your electronic devices from potential cyber attacks.
Finally, the EMP Faraday Backpack is also a great option for everyday use. Whether you’re commuting to work or running errands, the backpack will keep your belongings safe and dry in any weather.
Price and Value for the Money
So how much does the EMP Faraday Backpack cost, and is it worth the investment? The backpack currently retails for around $70 — $80, which is definitely on the higher end of the spectrum for backpacks. However, when you consider the added protection that the backpack offers, it’s a worthwhile investment for anyone who values preparedness and wants to ensure that their electronic devices are protected.
Customer Reviews and Feedback
So what do other customers have to say about the EMP Faraday Backpack? Overall, the backpack has received positive reviews from customers who appreciate its combination of waterproof capabilities and EMP protection. Many customers have also noted that the backpack is durable and well-made. And it is.
If you’re someone who values preparedness and wants to ensure that your electronic devices are protected, the investment in the EMP Faraday Backpack is worth it. Especially at the price point that it was purchased.
Conclusion and final thoughts
In conclusion, the EMP Faraday Backpack is a must-have for anyone who values preparedness and wants to ensure that their electronic devices are protected. The backpack’s combination of waterproof capabilities and EMP protection make it a game-changer for anyone who wants to be ready for anything. While the backpack may be more expensive than traditional backpacks or other Faraday bags, the added protection and convenience are well worth the investment. So if you’re looking for a backpack that will keep your belongings safe and secure in any situation, the EMP Faraday Backpack is the way to go.
As of this writing (March 23rd, 2023), it looks like both ReadyHour and My Patriot Supply are both sold out of the pack. They may be the same company due to the branding I see when I place orders, but not sure.
